School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS)
HKUST’s School of Humanities and Social Science (SHSS) offers the largest interdisciplinary university-level program in humanities and social sciences in Greater China, and it is the only one to have an explicit program-wide comparative focus. (SHSS) has strategic partnerships with world renowned institutions, such as the California Institute of Technology, the University of California at Los Angeles, Peking University, the University of Virginia and Waseda University. To give students a truly global outlook, HKUST SHSS provides opportunities for international exchange for one semester or one full academic year in prestigious universities in Asia, Europe or the United States. The Global China Studies program is designed to produce an elite group of Chinese specialists who conduct critical analyses of issues related to China in a global context. The program offers solid language training to equip the students with strong communication skills in order to excel their future development.
HKUST is ranked 5th in Asia for Social Sciences and Management. The School has developed very strong research credentials, ranked No. 1 in Citations in Social Science among Asian Universities and No. 38 in the world for Social Science by the Times Higher Education Rankings 2014.
HKUST SHSS currently offers two undergraduate degree program – BSc in Global China Studies: Humanities and Social Science and BSc in Quantitative Social Analysis. Students receive a multidisciplinary training in relevant subjects, covering a wide range of important topics such as globalization, economic development, social and political change, literature, media and history. Students could also consider admission to one of the interdisciplinary programs mentioned in Interdisciplinary Programs Office page after first year of study.
