

The BSc in Ocean Science and Technology is an integrative program offered by the Department of Ocean Science, which equips students with a comprehensive, foundational, and cross-disciplinary understanding of ocean science and technology. Students also enjoy first-hand exposure to the latest scientific and technological developments related to investigating, conserving, and managing ocean resources. The general areas of ocean science covered include the foundational (e.g. biological, chemical, and physical processes and ecosystem functions), technological (e.g. instrumentation, data management, and pollution tracking), applied (e.g. marine biotechnology and pollution bioremediation), and socioeconomic (e.g. conservation and fisheries).
This curriculum places major emphasis on providing practicum experience and experiential learning opportunities, study trips, and overseas attachment to enhance students’ academic, professional, and personal development. Ultimately, the goal of the program is to equip students with the skillsets and attributes that they will need to serve society as educators, ocean scientists and technologists, and other professionals in environment-related sectors, both locally and internationally.

Hong Kong is a coastal city with rich and diverse marine resources because of its unique geographical location in the biologically diverse Western Indo-Pacific region. The public, NGO, and private sectors are demanding ever more talented professionals to carry out environmental impact assessment for future coastal infrastructure projects and the burgeoning business of ecotourism. Graduates of the Ocean Science and Technology program are competitive in both higher studies and the job market, and are well equipped to pursue environment-related and maritime professions in consultancy companies, NGOs, and government agencies at home and abroad.
