HKUST degrees are well-recognized by many respected higher education institutions. For example, HKUST Business School has a double-accreditation status by EQUIS and AACSB while School of Engineering is accredited by the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand according to the Washington Accord. Since the establishment of the university, many of our graduates have gone to prestigious overseas institutions such as Yale, Princeton, UC Berkeley, UPENN, Cornell, Columbia etc. for their further studies.
HKUST’s minimum admission requirement is 3322+33 (Level 3 in English Language; Level 3 in Chinese Language; Level 2 in Mathematics Compulsory; Level 2 in Liberal Studies; Level 3 in Elective 1; and Level 3 in Elective 2 or M1/M2). HKUST may consider JUPAS applicants, as special consideration case, on case by case basis:
You are encouraged to get more information by checking out our score references and making use of our JUPAS score calculator on https://join.ust.hk/admissions/jupas.
The University calculates the HKDSE admission score based on the results of the 5 or 6 subjects attained (depending on different schools/programs). M1/M2 is treated in the same way as an elective. Extra core or elective subjects are generally used for giving bonus point or as a tie-breaker only.
We would encourage students to choose elective subjects according to their interests and ability. In calculating admission scores, we accord the same weighting to Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Combined Science.
In fact, we put the same weighting to M1 and M2. Find out here. if M1/M2 affects one's admission score from our admission score calculators.
While the University ranks applicants primarily based on their HKDSE results on their HKDSE results on the best 5 or 6 subjects, it also considers the overall profile of a student. The following factors may result in an upward adjustment on the applicant's position in the priority list:
For admission, we do not see the need to retake all HKDSE subjects. In handling repeated attempts, we calculate the admission score using the best result in each subject. And, don't worry. We do not have any score penalty.
Students applying to HKUST are expected to satisfy General Admission Requirements and School/Program-specific Requirements. The university general entrance requirements are 332233 in 4 core subjects plus 2 elective subjects. However, specific schools/programs may have specific requirements that are higher than the university general entrance requirements. Students are advised to go to here for further information.
For admission, JUPAS applicants are required to meet the "332233" requirement which includes a minimum of Level 3 in HKDSE Chinese Language.
No, we do not accept JUPAS applicants to present other English attainments in place of HKDSE English Language.

We strongly advise students to put their dream programs as their top JUPAS choices. University entry is not about admission score only. Applicants should make good use of the 2 months after the HKDSE exams to know more about the universities and the various JUPAS choices. Make sure you only choose programs that you are willing to invest 4 years of your time. We strongly advise students NOT to do a lot of gaming based on a misunderstood concept of the JUPAS mechanism. It is a tragedy when academically able applicants forego their dream career by putting a "certainly reachable but undesirable" program as their No. 1 choice.
Applicants who wish to apply for admission on the strength of their HKDSE Examination results should apply via JUPAS and will be considered on the basis of their HKDSE Examination results. JUPAS applicants with other academic results in language subjects and/or music qualifications can input such results in the section "Other Qualification" in their JUPAS application. If you have HKDSE plus other qualifications, you can choose to either apply through JUPAS or apply directly to HKUST via Direct Admissions.
Students applying on the basis of HKDSE results only must apply through JUPAS. This applies to school candidates in S6 and all other applicants. If you have HKDSE plus other qualifications, you can choose to either apply through JUPAS or apply directly to HKUST via Direct Admissions.
In general, we try to learn more about the applicant's personality, aspirations, and motivation/suitability for the program applied. There is no restriction on your personal statement with regards to its format, content, length and etc. However, A good essay (500 words OEA Additional Information) should tell a story and have a clear focus, reveal passion, as well as expose personality and talent.
You are advised to visit the JUPAS website for application procedures and go through the User Guide which will guide you step-by-step through the application process.
