Students who wish to spend more time exploring their interests may apply and be admitted to the School of Engineering without a major. They will be able to apply to Computer Engineering during the Major Selection Exercise at the end of the first two semesters.

HKUST’s BEng in Computer Engineering (CPEG) focuses on the analysis, design, implementation, and utilization of computer systems, from embedded microprocessors and notebook/desktop computers to supercomputers. It shows how they are integrated with other systems and devices to interact with the physical world and meet the challenges associated with real-world application. It is a practical field that bridges the gap between computer science and electronic engineering, software and hardware. CPEG offers students an in-depth understanding of both hardware and software and their cross-interaction in the design of cutting-edge electronic and computer systems.

2-in-1: Best of Both Worlds

The BEng in Computer Engineering program is jointly run by the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE), and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE). The program provides balanced training in both hardware and software skills, covering all architectural and engineering aspects of computer-based systems. CPEG students can take full advantage of the state-of-the-art facilities of both departments. They can also deepen their knowledge by taking elective courses in various technical areas of specialization. Final year students can select a CSE or ECE final year project according to their particular interests. CPEG is a well-integrated 2-in-1 program!

“I grew a lot throughout my undergraduate career at HKUST. Not only did I participate in plenty of academic events, such as hackathons and programming competitions, but I also enjoyed various extracurricular activities. I helped to organize various student and volunteering events, and eventually became an executive committee member of the CPEG Society. Studying at CPEG provided me with a breadth of knowledge and opportunities. I took courses and embarked on projects that equipped me with both hardware and software skills. Being exposed to such a wide range of experiences opened up numerous career paths, from which I eventually chose to become a software engineer.”
