I am Scarlet Chen, a first year student in HKUST business school, major in economics and finance. Like most other students from Beijing, aiming for Qinghua or Peking university has been my major goal before University Entrance Examination. However, after judging and weighing the pros and cons for studying in mainland China and in Hong Kong, I made the decision to come here. After a semester of living in UST, I found some of my previous expectations fulfilled while others left blank.

我高中是理科生，来科大却选择了读商，因为自己比纯粹的理工科学生还是“文艺”了那么点儿。我感兴趣的事情很多：写东西、戏剧、音乐、心理学、电影、尝试新奇的食物，等等。
来香港一年了，我已经对港科大的生活比较适应。这里的学习节奏很紧张，但除去作业和考试，课程本身以及教授的授课总有许多启发我思考的地方。专心学业之外，我也通过参加社团活动发展自己的兴趣爱好。我是内地学生学者联谊会本科部《似水流年》杂志编辑部的主编，也是港科大“阳光大使朋辈辅导计划”项目中的一名朋辈心理辅导员。
顺便提一下，我参加过两次北京高考，所以我对报志愿、申请以及其它相关的事情都比较熟悉，也有些自己的心得，希望这些个人经验也能够帮到更多的新生。

A bit about myself:
I studied science subjects in high school but I chose to major in business in HKUST, because I think I’m more ‘artistic’ than a typical science or engineering student. Actually I’m interested in a wide range of things, such as writing, dramas, music, psychology, movies, trying new foods, etc.
After studying for one year in UST, I’m now quite adapted to campus life here. Study style here is very fast; except the heavy workload, the courses and what professors teach in class can really arise my critical thinking. Apart from study hard, I also participate in activities to develop my interests. I’m the editor-in-chief of the magazine Timeless sponsored by MSSSUG, and I newly become a peer counselor of the “Peer Counseling Program”.
By the way, I took JEE twice, so I know much about application and other matters related to it, and I hope my own experience can help more new applicants.

Message to prospective students:
Although HKUST is well known to be ‘the University of Stress and Tension’, it is a university in which you can explore yourself to the fullest and to the best. If you want to be more collaborative, more independent, and more assertive, if you want to experience a new kind of campus culture, if you want to have a chance to extent your dream and find more possibilities, HKUST will be your right choice.

To describe the life here in one word, that would be "freedom". A lot more
freedom compared with life in mainland universities. No GFW, no Internet
fare, no lights out, even no permanent "class". You can choose to study
hard every minute, or to join lots of societies. You can stay up to coding,
or have a BBQ party by the coast. You have to arrange everything for
yourself, to plan for yourself, also, you'll have to pay for it.

Among students in Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, I am a little bit special. I was an art student in high school; my secondary school isn’t that famous; I major in Global Business and I have unique experiences. I was not at all the best student in class. I faced great difficulties in my study for some time; I had to balance my study and work at students’ societies and I used to think that dreams were only dreams. My life was neither smooth nor perfect. However, the difficulties I faced are the very treasure that I would like to share with you.

Message to prospective students:
Just like what I was puzzling about a year ago, you may have no clear ideas on what your future will be like, or what a university is. I used to be ambitious about my future. However, the reality always cooled me down. With more and more difficulties appearing on my way, I started to think that my dreams might be too far away. How can I be admitted by such great universities like Peking University, Qinghua University or HKUST? That was too hard. You may have the same worry as me. You don’t know what it is like studying in a university in Hong Kong; you don’t know whether you have a chance to go to HKUST based on your current grades; you are wondering which department to choose or you may have no ideas on how to plan for your future. My feeling about life in UST is probably quite different with most of mainland students since I come from a small city and didn’t have broad vision until I came to Hong Kong. I had lots of “first-time experience” here. I tried to run a society. I went to wild camp. I did a volunteer trip. I even had an internship in the first year. I will treasure all of the experience for the rest of my life. Through all this events, I grew a lot, getting more open and gradually integrated into the diverse culture here. Occasionally I feel tired, but most of the time I smile from heart. HKUST is the place I live, learn, and love.

I am both quiet and passionate. Before coming here I took part in competitions on several subjects (with a provincial 2nd award in National Chemistry Olympics and so on) and science and technology innovation contests, which equipped me with a wide range of knowledge and a desire to learn more. I have chosen Electronic Engineering as my major for my university years basically based on my personal interest and the need of talents for the information age. Now I am an Executive Committee Member of Mainland Student and Scholar Society, IT and Promotion Secretary of Bookwarm Second-hand Items Sharing Platform, and a Student Representative of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering. I enjoy studying everything related to computer, listening to music, editing videos and playing badminton (just for fun, lol). Learning and living in HKUST is a completely different experience compared to staying in Mainland. There are various opportunities and resources available for you, so that you can find your way towards success in the future.

On the very first day you arrive in Hong Kong, senior students would help newcomers adapt to the environment here through the Peer Mentor Program. I did indeed find the environment to be very different, especially with the lively English-based teaching style, the multicultural environment, and all the different society activities, lectures, seminars, exchange programs and internship programs… Personally, I believe the education offered by UST can train you at least in four aspects which are essential to becoming an outstanding person - opportunity management, international prospects, communication and cooperation, and mature values. One and a half year past, then I look back, all I can see is a naive little kid back in high school. I changed a lot. The way I look at things, the way I think about problems in the world, they all changed. Rather than a place for a decent UG degree, a place which can provide you with better chances for exchange, now I see HKUST as a place which offer the opportunity to force yourself to grow up, to sharpen your mind, to completely defeat you and force you to stand up again. Maybe you have dream right now, but you need a plan to fulfill it step by step; maybe you have no idea what you want to do, then you need to discover what exactly do you want to do. Message to prospective students:
There are plenty of opportunities and freedom in UST, although studying here is not easy. As a student in School of Humanities and Social Science, I've seen something different from what students from other schools may have seen. Our school provide us opportunities for self enrichment, such as lectures addressed by professors from other top universities, voluntary work, cultural events in Hong Kong. For example, independent documentary director Hu Jie once came to our university. We appreciated his documentary and communicated with him, which shocked us by the vivid embodiness of civic awareness. Apart from opportunies in our school, we learn shouldering responsibilities and cooperation from self management, society activities and voluntary works. UST is full of challenges and choices. It's freedom and dynamic academic atmosphere would make mainland universities pale by comparison.

I am XIAO Chenhao, from Xiamen, Fujian Province. Just like you, I was once experiencing a hard time during Grade 3, dreaming of an ideal university. But I had never been able to imagine studying in HKUST. It was hard to make a decision, but HKUST’s free and active academic atmosphere, international education modern and leading ranking deeply impress me. So finally, I chose HKUST instead of Tsinghua University and Hong Kong University. After a semester, I am more convinced that my choice is wise.

I am crazy about Chinese traditional culture and classical literature with an appreciation for Han han. I enjoy the western living style and am willing to accept the values of westerners, which cover freedom, self-accomplishment and a love for nature. Sometimes I am lazy to go for plans but when it stands out as a must, or when I find passion in it, I will do it day and night non-stop. I don't really want a perfect life, for mistakes make it more perfect than ever. Usually thinking for myself, deciding for myself and expressing myself, this is my simple life and I can't love it more.

Message to prospective students:
Another thing that even overweighs knowledge itself is experience. Sometimes people can even tell who you are just from your experience. It's your experience rather than your knowledge that would shape your personality and further more your future. Here in UST，you will find chances more than your widest imagination for everything. Just one sentence for you: study hard and play hard. This university is where, hopefully, you will need to know what you have passion for and where your strength lie. It doesn't matter at all what you love, but rather, how hard you have tried that counts. Only when you have efforts beyond your capacity can you improve and grow. And it doesn't really matter where you are, as long as you really understand. But anyhow, we are still young and don't worry about anything, just try!

Hello, everybody! I am a preparatory year student in business school. Like most of you, I was raised in a Chinese family, which means I am really familiar with all the process of JEE and the application for universities. Even though I stayed in HK for less than one year, I did have a great time and experienced a lot. Life here is colorful as well as challenging, but that is exactly what I want. I joined many societies and activities, and they helped me to adapt to university life quickly. What’s more, I have made a lot of friends from different part of the world. The beautiful memories of being together with them are my lifelong treasure.

Message to prospective students:
HKUST provides you with not only the beautiful scenery and qualified professors, a lot of opportunities are accessible here as well. It is definitely the best decision for you if you are looking for a somehow different life, but without culture shock. You must know the name of our school: the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. These days, however, people tend to give another explanation for her name-- the Hong Kong University of Stress and Tension. It is true that you may experience some stress about your academy or adaptation, but you all be fine and enjoy the life here as long as you try your best to fit into it. At that time, you will find yourself more mature and independent. In high school, I was concentrated on the College Entrance Exam. The info sessions of HKUST prepared me for entering HKUST mentally. HKUST provides a lot of such courses, like math and physics. Apart from study, I'm also interested in participating in various activities.
